Liverpool won Group D of the Champions League in midweek, when beating Ajax 1-0 at home. That leaves one qualification place available and Atalanta will claim it if avoiding defeat away to Ajax. Atalanta start this game in second, a point ahead of Ajax. With Midtjylland bottom on just one point, the Dutch side therefore know the task ahead of them. Win this match or get ready for a Europa League campaign in the new year. Six of the seven points that Ajax have in this group came from wins against the Danish side. The other was earned in Italy but it should have been more. They led 2-0 in Atalanta but came home with a 2-2 draw. But for that, they’d just need to avoid defeat in this game to qualify. Home form in the Champions League has seen Ajax struggling with three straight defeats before beating Midtjylland. The weekend saw them lose their 100% home league record, losing 2-1 at home to Twente, though they still lead the table by two points. Not the best of starts to an important week.

Atalanta were making good progress in this group with a 4-0 win at Midtjylland, followed by rescuing that home point against Ajax. Then, they showed how inconsistent they can be with a 5-0 home loss to Liverpool and then beating them 2-0 away. Next up came a home game against Midtjylland and they again had to come from behind to get a point. Now they need to avoid defeat in the Netherlands to again reach the knock-out stages of this competition. Four of their last five away games in this group have been won (the other a quarter final loss last season to PSG).  They had a free weekend with their Serie A game postponed. Atalanta are known for their high-scoring games but they are yet to concede an away goal in this group. A bet on under 2.5 goals is the tip.
