Two of the top three best defensive teams in the Bundesliga will be on view as Mainz host St. Pauli in matchday 23 on Saturday. This match between the 6th-placed Die Nullfünfer and the 14th-placed Kiezkicker at the MEWA Arena comes with our prediction of under 2.5 goals.

Mainz have 35 points and only two behind the top four clubs, although just two points above the ninth-placed Wolfsburg. The visiting St. Pauli have 21 points and are five points above the relegation zone.

A 2-0 win away at Heidenheim last weekend saw Mainz pick their seventh point in the last four matches. The only defeat in that sequence came at Werder Bremen. That continues the impressive defensive record of Mainz, as only Bayern Munich have conceded fewer goals than them.

That gets better at home, where Mainz have won five and drawn one of their last six league matches, keeping four clean sheets. St. Pauli also have a good defensive record, conceding only 25 goals in the season. The positives of those impressive numbers are drowned in the fact that they have scored a league-low 18 goals.
