Anastasia Potapova, the 28th seed, and 31st seed Marta Kostyuk will battle in the quarterfinals at the Indian Wells Open. The winner will then play either Iga Swiatek or Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the final. Anastasia Potapova has advanced to this round for the first time in three appearances in this tournament. Each year she has finished a round higher than the previous season. Last year she produced a third-round finish. The two-time tour champion defeated the in-form Jasmine Paolini in three sets in the last round. Now with a 10-5 record, Potapova had won her first two matches here without dropping a set. Yet to play past the quarters at any event this season, Potapova’s record against Kostyuk will have her confident of progressing. She has won both their previous encounters which were all played last season. Potapova is up to 29th in the live ranking.

Marta Kostyuk has also moved up in the live ranking and is now placed at number 27 in the world. The Ukrainian defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova by the loss of five games to advance to this round. This was the 14th win of a strong season thus far for Kostyuk who has lost just five times. The 21-year-old is yet to drop a set in this event but did receive a walkover in the third round from Marketa Vondrousova. This is Kostyuk’s best-ever performance not only in this tournament but in WTA 1000 events. She made the third round at the China Open last season and before this year had never gone past the second round here. Kostyuk has played all 19 matches this season on hard courts and was a finalist in San Diego right before arriving for her fourth appearance here.
