Reds and Gunners set for early-season title battle
The undisputed showpiece of matchday three in the Premier League will come from a jam-packed Anfield, where Liverpool and Arsenal will face off, looking to head into the break in pole position in the league standings.
Both sides are putting perfect records on the line in this early-season title battle, with the Reds and the Gunners both recording wins in their first two matches of the campaign. You can check out our Liverpool vs. Arsenal prediction for all our experts’ thoughts and insights on this clash.
These two sides battled tooth and nail for the title throughout the 2024-25 season, and in the end, it was Arne Slot’s side that clinched the title by 10 points, securing their 20th top-flight league title, now level with Manchester United.
The Reds have made a somewhat less-than-convincing start to their title defence, but they have beaten both Bournemouth and Newcastle United, scoring seven goals combined, which was the most of any team over the first two weekends of the new term.
However, Liverpool have not beaten Arsenal in their last six Premier League encounters!
Arsenal, meanwhile, have been the epitome of defensive mastery this season, having kept clean sheets in both their games so far, while summer signing Viktor Gyokeres opened his account for his new employers with a brace against Leeds United last weekend and confirmed our football predictions.
Still, despite being title contenders and all their good work over the past few years, you can’t help but feel that this season is the one in which Mikel Arteta needs to bring silverware back to the Emirates Stadium.
Interesting stats for Liverpool vs. Arsenal
When these English heavyweights crossed paths last season, both their Premier League matches ended in 2-2 draws. Notably, each of the last three top-flight matches between these sides here at Anfield also finished in stalemates.
Arsenal have not beaten the league champions in Merseyside in their last 12 attempts (W0 D5 L7), dating all the way back to September 2012 when Arteta was still a player for the Gunners under Arsene Wenger.
However, the North Londoners come into this clash off the back of consecutive clean sheets in the Prem this season and are now aiming to win their first three games of a new league campaign for just the second time in a couple of decades.
