Yulia Putintseva and Sloane Stephens, both unseeded, meet for the second time this year with a scheduled French Open tie. The winner of this first-rounder will then take on Katie Boulter or Paola Badosa next. Yulia Putintseva defeated Stephens on clay in Rome earlier this month. The win allowed her to retake the advantage in this series at 4-3. Putintseva has won twice now in three matchups on clay with Stephens and will be confident of a third success. The Ukrainian, a two-time French Open quarter-finalist, is back at this tournament for a sixth successive year. Last year she progressed to the third round and is defending 130 points. The 29-year-old, who is down to 39th in the live ranking, is coming off a first-round elimination in Strasbourg.

Sloane Stephens has hit a snug and arrives here having lost her last four matches. But as she has excelled in this tournament in the past, the American will be confident of putting a halt to this. Stephens, a former finalist here, hasn’t lost a first-round tie at Roland Garros since her debut in 2011. She has qualified for the second week of competition for the last three years. Last season she made the fourth round thanks to a third-set victory over Putintseva. The 31-year-old won the title in Rouen last month to record her first tour title in two years. This propelled her back into the WTA top 30 where she is currently placed 35th. Stephens, who has compiled a 17-13 record, has won three times against Putintseva.
