World number 41 Yulia Putintseva and world number 61 Caroline Dolehide will match up in the quarter-finals at the Birmingham Classic. The winner of this second career meeting between these two will face Elisabetta Cocciaretto or Diana Shnaider in the semi-finals.

Yulia Putintseva has equalled her best-ever result here by advancing to this round. The Kazakh was a quarter-finalist the last time she participated in Birmingham in 2019.

She has been in fine form in her return to this WTA 250 event and has won both her matches without losing a set. To set up this tie with Dolehide, Putintseva dominated Anhelina Kalinina and won their second-round matchup by the loss of just three games.

She has now compiled a 25-15 record and is up one place to 40th in the live ranking. Putintseva defeated Dolehide two months ago in Madrid in their first career encounter.

Caroline Dolehide is playing in the main draw in Birmingham for the first time. In her first two appearances, she had failed to progress past the qualifying rounds.

The American had suffered the same fate this year also before she was granted a way through as a lucky loser. She has grabbed that opportunity with both hands and is now only one win away from a second tour semi-final.

Dolehide got the better of fifth seed Elise Mertens who was forced to retire in the second set. The 25-year-old hasn’t won more than two main draw matches at a tour event this year. She has struggled and remains on a losing record as she has lost 15 of 25 fixtures. Advancing to this round has propelled her nine places to 52nd in the live ranking.
