The third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League will see Zalgiris play host to Hacken in the first leg this Thursday. Both sides will be entering the competition in this round, and the winner of this two-legged tie will face Aberdeen FC in the playoffs. The hosts are the current A Lyga champions and won the 2022 season by a huge 21-point margin over Kauno Zalgiris in second place. However, it has been a little more difficult this term as they are currently in second place after 25 games in the season and trailing Paneveys by six points. They have also played one more game than the current league leaders. Zalgiris were involved in Champions League qualifying over the last few weeks and beat Struga 2-1 on aggregate in the first round but were knocked out by Galatasaray 3-2 on aggregate the following round. The visitors played out a stalemate against FA Siauliai over the weekend, which extended their winless run to four matches, including the two against Galatasaray. They are the outsiders coming into this match.
Hacken were also involved in Champions League qualifying over the last few weeks, having won Allsvenskan last season. They managed 64 points in their 30 matches, beating Djurgarden by a seven-point margin. The visitors are currently third in the league this season after 18 matches and trail IF Elfsborg in first place by four points. Their record this season reads as 12 wins, two draws, and four losses. Hacken took on The New Saints in their first Champions League qualifier and secured an easy 5-1 win over the two legs. In the second round, they were drawn against the champions of the Faroe Islands, KI, and after a 0-0 first leg followed by a 3-3 second match, the sides had to be separated on penalties. Hacken lost the penalty shootout 4-3. Hacken have failed to win either of their last two away matches but are the favourites to win this encounter, according to the bookies.
