World number 58 Viktoriya Tomova and world number 49 Donna Vekic will meet in the Bad Homburg Open semi-finals. The winner will then square off with Diana Shnaider or Emma Navarro for the title.
Tomova has equalled her best-ever result at tour level by advancing to this round. She is now seeking to progress to a first tour final. If she manages to win the title, she will enter a unique group of players to become tour champions as qualifiers.
Tomova, who debuted here last season, started this year’s edition in the qualifying rounds. That was to begin her grass season and she has won three of her four matches in straight sets.
Her first three-set match came in the quarter-finals against Anna Blinkova. In the contest, she overcame a first-set defeat and won a tiebreaker in the last set.
The Bulgarian, who was a semi-finalist in Rabat earlier in the year, has now won 25 of 45 matches. Advancing to this round has moved the 29-year-old up 10 places to 48th in the live ranking, a new career high.
Vekic is a much more experienced tour-level player than Tomova. She has competed in 12 finals and won four titles, with one being on grass. The Croat will therefore arrive for this match confident of booking her place in the final.
Vekic, who is debuting in Bad Homburg, was granted a walkover in the quarter-finals by defending champion Katerina Siniakova. She therefore has had more time to prepare for this showdown with Tomova which should be an advantage.
A semi-finalist in Linz earlier in the year, Vekic has compiled a 16-13 record. She has won four of six matches on grass. Vekic defeated last year’s runner-up here Lucia Bronzetti in the first round in straight sets.
She would then require a decider to get the better of Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round. The former WTA top 20 player is now up seven places in the live ranking to number 42.
