Veronika Kudermetova faces Peyton Stearns for a place in round two of the Brisbane International. A tough next opponent is on the way with the third seed Daria Kasatkina due to be faced. Here's our match prediction.

Kudermetova is the world number 72 but was as high as ninth in October 2022. The 27-year-old has been struggling for form and is looking to avoid a fourth successive defeat. The most recent loss was in October and no sets have been won by her in the last three losses.

Her hope is that the form that took her to the last four of the Korea Open in September returns in this outdoor hard court tournament. Her last appearance in the Brisbane International saw her beaten in the second round.

Peyton Stearns is 47th in the rankings and won one title this year, though that was on clay in Morocco. This is her first match since having to retire in October's China Open. Stearns had beaten Leylah Fernandez and led Anna Kalinskaya by a set before retiring in the third.

The 23-year-old last reached a quarter-final in Cleveland four months ago and that was played on an outdoor hard court. We tip Stearns to get the win here.
