Jamaica and the USA will begin their CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament against each other on Sunday. The two nations have been pooled together in Group A. USA arrive for this opener after winning the CONCACAF Nations League on Monday. Gregg Berhalter’s charges defeated Canada 2-0 in the final to win their second Nations League crown in just the second edition of the tournament. They won the inaugural tourney in 2020. The USMNT are the reigning Gold Cup champions and with their Nations League win, are favourites to win again. If they do so, this will see them tie Mexico as the two most successful nations in the tournament with eight wins. The USA are unbeaten in the last five encounters with Jamaica, winning four times. They bring with them a six-match unbeaten run for this latest fixture with four of those games ending in victory.

Jamaica last won against the USA in a friendly match played in 2019. They have won three of the last 14 matches against the US. One of those wins however is arguably their best result in this fixture. The Caribbean nation defeated the North Americans 2-1 in the Gold Cup semifinals in 2015 to advance to their first final. They have since played in one more final which they lost to the US in 2017. Heimir Hallgrimsson’s charges arrive for this year’s tournament in woeful form. They have not won in their last 10 matches with half of those ending in defeat. The Reggae Boyz have lost their last two matches, both friendlies, with the last seeing them fall 2-1 to Jordan. They will hope that Demarai Gray’s decision to switch allegiance from England will spark a turnaround. Gray is the latest player to switch from England to play for Jamaica in recent years. The others are Michail Antonio, Leon Bailey, and Ethan Pinnock.
