Ukraine are almost in must-win territory as they come up against Morocco, who are targeting two wins out of two in the 2024 Summer Olympics men’s football competition. This Group B match at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard in Saint-Etienne on Saturday comes with a likely prediction of Ukraine avoiding defeat.
The Ukrainians are at the at the bottom of the group after starting with a defeat to Iraq and have a worse disciplinary record compared to Argentina, who are also on zero points. Morocco is second with three points, only separated from leaders Iraq because of an inferior disciplinary record. Ukraine will face Argentina in their last match and wouldn’t want to go there needing a win and help elsewhere to qualify.
That means a win here is a must, and Ukraine has some good recent form to fall back on. They have won five of their last six matches, which makes them feel that the 2-1 defeat to Iraq was an aberration. That matchday one loss came despite taking a lead early in the second half, so Ukraine will be careful not to let things slip.
Morocco will be high on confidence after posting a surprise 2-1 win over Argentina in the first match. It was a match that ended with crowd trouble and VAR controversy, but take nothing away from the two goals they scored. Both were netted by Soufiane Rahimi, with the second of those coming in the 51st minute via a penalty. With Iraq waiting in the wings in the last match, a win here will almost confirm their spot in the knockouts.
