Ugo Humbert, the 21st seed, and the unseeded Zhang Zhizhen will square off in the second round at the Australian Open. The winner will then play either Hubert Hurkacz or Jakub Mensik for a place in the fourth round. Ugo Humbert defeated multiple Grand Slam quarterfinalist David Goffin in four sets in the first round. He is now one win away from equaling his best-ever result at Melbourne which was achieved last season. The Frenchman has had a strong start to the year, picking up from where he left off in 2023. He has won the two fixtures he has played which has him on a six-match winning streak. Humbert, who is up to 20th in the live ranking, concluded last season by winning the title in Metz.

Zhang Zhizhen overcame the challenge of Federico Coria in the first round and won in straight sets. It was his first-ever win in the main draw in what is his second appearance at the Australian Open. He battled through two tiebreakers against Coria and this should have him confident of prolonging his stay here. Advancing to this round has propelled the Chinese number one to 48th place in the live ranking which is a new career high. Zhang has had an inconsistent start to the year and has lost twice in four outings.
