David Goffin is a former Wimbledon quarter finalist. He's hoping to get at least that far again this year and takes on Ugo Humbert in round three. The winner of this match faces either 23rd seeded Frances Tiafoe or unseeded Alexander Bublik in the last 16. Goffin was as high as seventh in the world five years ago, but began this tournament in 58th position. He's been as high as 39th this year but as low as 74th. Goffin has won one tournament this year, winning a clay court event held in Marrakech. He only played one warm-up grass court tournament but had a tough draw in Halle and lost in straight sets in his first match against world number one Danill Medvedev. He's had success in the past at Wimbledon. Not just the 2019 quarter final but two other runs to the fourth round. This year has seen him beat Radu Albot and 31st seeded Sebastian Baez for the loss of only seven games.

Ugo Humbert is the world number 112 and is bidding to equal his best run here. Three years ago, the Frenchman got to the fourth round beating two seeds (Mofils and Auger-Aliassime) before being beaten by eventual champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Last year he lost in the first round but has fared better in 2022. Round one saw him beat Tomas Etcheverry in five sets but needed to win the last two to do so. That took him into a match with third seeded (but not a great grass court player) Casper Ruud. Humbert lost the first set but won the next three to set up this match with Goffin. Last year Humbert was as high as 25th in the rankings but injuries haven't helped his cause. He won the Halle grass court tournament last year but lost in his first match when trying to defend that title. Of four grass court warm-up matches, he only won one of them. Goffin looks in the slightly better form, back him to get the win.
