For the first time in nearly 10 years, Turkey and Romania are set to face off. They do so in a crucial one-legged knockout tie towards their contest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The last time the two nations faced off was in 2017, when Romania claimed a 2-0 win in an international friendly. Read on for our prediction of the match from which the winner meets Slovakia or Kosovo in the final.
Romania’s win in the last meeting with Turkey, interestingly, will bear good prospects for the Turks. This is because in their latest five meetings, these nations have won alternately.
So, could this be the big opportunity for Turkey, who are looking to end a 24-year wait for a return to the World Cup? Maybe so, as the Crescent Stars are unbeaten in their last seven competitive matches. They will also have the advantage of playing at home, a chance to drive a dagger deep into the Tricolorii hearts.

Turkiye - Romania: Form Analysis
Turkey have grown in leaps and bounds since their heavy defeat to Spain. They haven't lost a match since their 6-0 loss to the European champions back in September. Vincenzo Montella’s charges come into this particular encounter having won three and drawn once in their last four outings.
In terms of attack, they were also at their best, netting 14 times. There’s still some ground to be covered though, with Turkey carrying only one clean sheet from their latest eight outings. That came against Bulgaria, and it will be harder here with key absentees being defensive players. At home, Turkey have avoided defeat in 10 of their last 12 competitive fixtures, winning eight.
Both Turkey and Romania have been involved in high-scoring matches.
Romania, third-place finishers in Group H, also had a strong performance in the Nations League in 2024/25. They’ve also been free-scoring and come here off the back of a 7-1 win against minnows San Marino. That was some recovery after their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Three times in their last five matches, the Romanians have now scored at least two goals. This is one of the Romanians’ qualities that will pose Turkey a few problems. In the qualifiers, Romania were the second-highest scorers in their group with 19 goals. However, a leaky backline, conceding 10 goals, didn’t help a lot.

Turkiye & Romania Squad Analysis
Though still considered a developing player in the Turkey team, Arda Guler has proven very key. He is coming into this game in good form and will definitely be one to watch.
The 21-year-old comes into this game off the back of a fine run of form at Real Madrid under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa. In Turkey’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, the youngster recorded a goal and three assists.
Orkun Kokcu’s bursting runs from midfield will also be crucial for Turkey’s attack. He's provided three goal contributions in his last two appearances for club side Besiktas, as well as having found the net in seven of his last 10 games. Kokcu also grabbed an assist against Spain back in November in their 2-2 draw.
Turkish defender Caglar Soyuncu has spent a month out injured and will miss this game too.
On the Romanian side, Stefan Baiaram will gladly carry the load of goal expectations, as he is in good form. The Universitatea Craiova man scored against San Marino and is coming off three goal contributions in his team’s last four games.
While Romania are expected to excel in attack, they have a big blow to deal with in defence. First-choice keeper, Celta Vigo’s Andrei Radu, picked up a calf issue in his club’s latest game.

Our Turkiye vs Romania Prediction
Goals are expected aplenty in Istanbul when these two nations face off. They were both prolific in the qualifiers and came here on good scoring runs. In their last outing, Romania netted seven times, while Turkey have scored 14 goals in their last four matches.
It has, however, proven tough keeping clean sheets for both teams. The two nations are missing key men in defence, and that will be crucial here. With the numbers recorded in defence and attack, our prediction for Turkey v Romania is BTTS and over 2.5 goals.
