Tour de France - Stage 17 Predictions & Betting tips - Tour de France
by Matthew Newman |
Stage 17 has two minor Cat 4 climbs on the road from Bollene to Valence, which means that this is going to be a stage for the sprinters. This looks like their final proper chance until the final stage into Paris, so it's the fast men that make up the prediction.
Realistically, that narrows the pool of potential winners right down to just a small handful who are capable in a sprint. There are two big contenders and a couple who might find themselves in with a chance if things were to fall their way.
The first main contender is the man who has the green jersey on his back, Jonathan Milan. He was the winner on Stage 8 and was runner-up on Stages 3 and 9 in a tour that has not been built for the sprinters.
It was Tim Merlier who won the two stages that Milan was second in, suffering a mechanical issue that kept him out of the mix in the stage that Milan won. He is the better sprinter of the pair, and it is no surprise to see him as the favourite to win the stage.
Biniam Girmay (the 2024 green jersey winner) and Kaden Groves are the other two sprinters in the field who have the ability to play a part if the cards drop right for them.

Tour de France - Stage 17 - Tour de France prediction key points
- There are only 160.4km here, so this is a relatively short stage.
- Two Cat 4 climbs should not be an issue for any rider, which makes this a day for the quick men.
- Although he is only fourth in the green jersey ranking, Tim Merlier is the top sprinter in the race.
- We mentioned this earlier in the tour, but Merlier now leads Jonathan Mlan 7-1 in sprint finishes that both have contested.

Our Tour de France - Stage 17 - Tour de France prediction
Stage 17 of the Tour de France is a sprinting stage, which really only has a couple of potential winners. There is this stage and the one into Paris to go for the quick men, so the two big contenders are going to be desperate to get on the board here.
Both Jonathan Milan and Tim Merlier have won stages on the tour, with the latter coming out on top twice. He is the better of the two and has generally come out on top when they have both contested the same sprint, so our Tour de France Stage 17 prediction is for Tim Merlier to win.
