14th seed Tommy Paul is up against unseeded Miomir Kecmanovic in round three of the Australian Open. The winner may well have a tough match in the last 16 with possible opponents being second seed Carlos Alcaraz or wild card Shang Junchen. Paul began this tournament ranked 14th but is down a place in the live rankings. Beating Kecmanovic will see him go back to 14th. He reached the last four of this hard court Grand Slam last year and is again going well. So far in this tournament he's had wins over Gregoire Barrere in straight sets and then got revenge on Jack Draper for a recent defeat. The American won in four sets, droppig the second one.
When this Grand Slam began, Miomir Kecmanovic was ranked 60th. His run to the the third round has seen him climb to 46th and he can rise another five places with a win over Paul. His career high is 27th and that was his ranking this time last year. He's bidding to make it to the fourth roud of the Australian Open for the second time in three years. Last year did see him drop down the rankings due to a terrible run in Grand Slam events. He didn't win a single match and lost in the first round of all four. It's gone better this week though with victories over Yosuke Watanuki (after losing the first set) and then a five-set victory over Jan-Lennard Struff who was the 24th seed. He blew hot and cold in that match as he only won a couple of games in the two sets he won. Kecmanovic leads Paul 2-1 in previous meetings but lost their most recent match played last year. We tip Paul to get the win.
