Grigor Dimitrov has twice reached the semi-finals of this Masters tournament. He probably still has nightmares over last year's quarter-final loss to Alex de Minaur in which he failed to win a game.

This is his first clay court match of 2026. It's been a tough year so far on hard courts with six of his eight matches being lost. Six of his last seven matches have been lost. In 2025, he won five of his nine matches on clay, including the last three.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry has been far more successful on clay this year. He won the Rio title, got to the semi-finals in Buenos Aries and the quarters in Houston last week. Ten of his 12 clay court matches have been won this year.
