An unseeded player will be in the last eight of the Miami Open. That's guaranteed as Tomas Machac takes on Matteo Arnaldi for a place in the quarter finals. The winner will be up against either second seed Jannik Sinner or unseeded Christopher O'Connell. Machac had never previously won a main draw match in this Masters 1000 tournament until this year. He's had wins over wild card Darwin Blanch, fifth seed Andrey Rublev and then a come-from-behind three set win over unseeded Andy Murray. The match with Murray saw him let slip a 5-2 lead in the final set. Murray drew level as Machac struggled with his serve but an ankle injury didn't help the Scottish player in the final games of the match. His wins have taken him up to a career high 50th and he could get as high as 42nd if winning this match.
Also winning his first main draw match in the Miami Open has been Matteo Arnaldi. He's only played here once before and lost in the first qualifying round. In the latest rankings list, Arnaldi is a career high 38th. He's set a new one thanks to this run to the last 16 in Miami and is now 35th. A win over Machac can see him rise to a possible 32nd and a seeding at future Grand Slam and Masters events. Arnaldi has had wins over Arthur Fils, 17th seed Alexander Bublik and Denis Shapovalov and is yet to drop a set. We tip him to beat Machac and reach the quarter finals.
