Stefanos Tsitsipas is in top form and the sixth seed takes on qualifier Thiago Monteiro in the Madrid Masters. The seeded opponent in the next round of this outdoor clay court tournament is Jiri Lehecka. Tstisipas has made a storming start to the European clay court season. He won the Monte Carlo Masters beating Casper Ruud in the final. Last week saw him get to the Barcelona Open final but this time Ruud beat him. The Greek player is currently seventh in the live rankings and fifth in the ATP Race. He received a bye into this second round and will hope for another deep run in Madrid. Tsitsipas was the runne-up in 2019, made the last four in 2022 and the quarter-finals last year.

Thiago Monteiro is up to 109th in the live rankings after his first round victory over Dusan Lajovic. The Brazilian had to play two qualifying matches to get into the main draw. That wasn't easy with both needing a final set and one seeing him lose the first set. He claimed a good scalp when beating Lajovic in straight sets. Earlier this year he got to the last eight of the clay court tournament held in Rio but was lucky to get past round one. He took on Carlos Alcaraz but with the score at 1-1 in the first set his opponent retired. On the Challenger Tour he's reached a semi-final in Santa Cruz but this is a far tougher task and we tip Tsitsipas to win in straight sets.
