The Sharks welcome the Lions to Kings Park for this crucial encounter in the Carling Currie Cup. The home team had a bye last weekend and dropped from third place on the table to fourth without playing a game. The Griquas had a win and leapfrogged them into third place while the Pumas picked up two bonus points to put pressure on the Durban based team. The Sharks are on 24 points, two points ahead of the fifth placed Pumas with two matches to play. A win for them and a loss for the Pumas will guarantee them a semi-final place. If they lose and the Pumas and Griquas win then their fate is no longer in their hands. The Sharks have lost their last two matches in the competition and will be desperate to avoid three losses in a row. The Sharks have had to field weakened sides in the Currie Cup as this competition is running parallel with the more lucrative URC competition which they are also competing in.

The Lions finally broke their duck when they won their first match of the season at the 11th time of asking when they beat Western Province 33-10. This have been knocked out of the URC competition so they will be fielding their strongest possible team in this match. This is their final match in this competition as they are out of the running for the playoffs. The Lions looked like a different side in their last match as they defended brilliantly against a sustained onslaught from Western Province. They are however yet to win on the road as they have suffered five defeats with the average margin of defeat being  27 points.
