World number 95 Taro Daniel and 208th-ranked Seong Chan Hong will face off in the second round of qualifiers at the US Open on Thursday. The winner of this match will move on to face either Francisco Comesana or Federico Gaio in the next round. Daniel comes into this competition after reaching the second round at the Canada Masters earlier this month. There he beat top-30-ranked Adrian Mannarino in the first round. He began the year ranked 92nd but dropped outside the top 125 by the end of February. Daniel struggled on the clay and grass this season, however, he did show signs of improvement back on his favoured hard court in Canada. Now back inside the top 100, Daniel will be eager to kick on from here after beating Sumit Nagal in the first qualifier. The Japanese is 27-23 for the year and 17-10 on the hard surface. It is also the only surface he has maintained a positive record on this year.
Meanwhile, Seong Chan Hong will be making only his fourth ATP tournament appearance of the year in this one. The Korean has competed on the Challenger circuit for the majority of the season but has had very little joy up to now. His best performance of the season on the hard court came at the Rome GA Challenger event, where he reached the semi-final. Each of his three previous ATP tournaments saw him bow out in the first round of competition. Hong is now 21-22 for the year and 12-10 on the hard surface. Like his opponent, this is the only surface he has maintained a positive record on this year. He is a 3/1 outsider in this match, according to the bookmakers.
