Tamara Korpatsch will begin the defence of her Transylvania Open title with a first-round showdown with sixth seed Elina Avanesyan. The first three editions of this WTA 250 event were held in October. It was Korpatsch’s first-ever tour final and it ended perfectly. Elina Avanesyan has won two of three meetings with Korpatsch. One of her wins came in the qualifying rounds here in 2022. She will be hoping to get back to winning ways against her German opponent in her bid to stabilize her season. The Russian has also had an inconsistent start to the year and has so far compiled a 3-3 record. Avanesyan isn’t a dominant indoor hardcourt player and has so far won just eight of 15 matches on the surface. She has also not played an indoor hardcourt match since the 2022 campaign. Avanesyan, who is coming off a third-round Australian Open finish, has risen 12 places in the live ranking. She is ranked 62nd in the world and has equaled her career-high placing.
