Spain take on Sweden in the final of the 2022 Men's European Handball Championships. They are bidding to win the European title for the third tournament in a row. That's a feat that has only been achieved by their opponents in this final, who won the title in 1998, 2000 and 2002. Spain have won bronze medals in the World Championships and Olympics, since last winning the European title. They won all three of their matches in Group E as they began their title defence. That included a 32-28 win over Sweden in their second match with Fernandez scoring eight goals. Their only loss in these championships was in the Main Round, when being beaten 27-23 by Norway. Their semi-final saw them defeat Denmark 29-25 with Aleix Gomez in top form with 11 goals. This match is a repeat of the 2018 European final that Spain won 29-23, they'll be looking for a similar result on Sunday.
Sweden have won this title four times in the past but it's 20 years since their last triumph and only their second final since 2002. They were runners-up in the 2021 World Championships (losing to Denmark) but lost in the quarter finals at the Tokyo Olympics. They could only finish second in Group E in the Preliminary Round of these championships. That was due to the loss to Spain and only being able to draw with the Czech Republic. Their form has picked up since then but they nearly lost their semi-final to France. The French team were four goals up on Sweden but eventually lost the game 34-33. Spain look the stronger side and can repeat the win in the preliminary round to again win the title.
