The FA Cup third round sees Championship side Swansea taking on League Two club Morecambe. Swansea will be looking to improve on last year’s result which saw them eliminated at this stage of the competition following a 2-1 home loss to Bristol in a replay. Morecambe has already bettered their result from the previous campaign which saw them bow out in the first round.

Following the sacking of former manager Michael Duff at the beginning of December, the Swans have been on the comeback trail under caretaker manager Alan Sheehan. A 1-0 home victory over West Brom on New Year’s Day has Swansea up to 16th in the Championship standings with 32 points. They now sit 10 points above the relegation zone and eight points off the promotion playoff spots heading into the second half of the league season. Swansea are on a run of three victories, two draws and two defeats over their last seven games under Sheehan although the search for a permanent replacement carries on.

Morecambe have advanced to this stage of the world’s oldest national football competition following away victories over Lincoln and Wycombe in the first and second rounds. The FA Cup run for the Shrimps is one of the only positives for the club in recent times as their league form has dropped off a cliff. Following a strong start to the 2023/24 season which saw the visitors with a record of 8-3-3, Morecambe would go ice-cold in the next 10 matchdays. They managed only a single victory during that time, drawing three times and losing six matches to plummet down to 17th in the standings. Morecambe’s most recent appearance resulted in a 2-2 home draw with Harrogate while their latest away fixture was a heavy 5-0 defeat to Notts County.
