The first quarterfinal of the Budapest Grand Prix will see Dutch right-hander Suzan Lamens take on Belarus' experienced Alikasandra Sasnovich in what should be a very evenly contested match. Let's examine some of the data that helped us make our prediction for this quarterfinal.
Lamens is the less-experienced of the two players, but has had a very impressive 2024 so far. She has won twice, once in Trnava on the hard courts and then a month later she was victorious on the clay at Oeiras. She has saved an incredible 11 of 13 break points faced on her serve in the tournament. This has helped her defeat her two previous opponents in double-quick time - Winning 6-3, 6-0 over eighth seed Varvara Gracheva and then 6-4 , 6-0 over qualifier Carole Monnet in the second round.
Both players are currently ranked very closely together 137th for Lamens and 134th for Sasnovich. The latter has enjoyed a relatively smooth ride into the quarterfinals too. The Belarus right-hander was taken to three sets in her first-round win over Bulgarian second seed Viktoriya Tomova. She followed that with a more emphatic 6-3, 6-4 victory over defending champion Maria Timofeeva in round two.
Sasnovich has not reached a tournament final since losing on the hard courts in Cleveland in 2022 and her last victory in a tournament was on clay was in Brescia, back in 2014. Lamens has won 16 of 21 matches on clay this year, an impressive 76% win rate. Sasnovich has played just 15 matches on clay, winning nine for a 60% win rate.
Whoever wins this intriguing quarterfinal will take on the winner of the Elina Avanesyan vs. Anna Schmiedlova quarterfinal in the semi-final of the bottom half of the draw.
