It’s been a tough time recently for Sunderland interim manager Mike Dodds. His team has struggled for most of 2024 so far, dropping well out of the promotion and playoff battle and down to 15th. A run of two wins in 14 games is the issue, as well as two back-to-back 1-0 defeats in their most recent games, at home to Millwall and then last weekend away to Watford. One solace is that the home team are safe from relegation, but could find themselves finishing just three points ahead of today’s opponents should they end up on the end of another defeat in their final game of the season. Sunderland have really struggled in front of their home fans of late with no wins in their last six and their only points collected coming from two 0-0 draws. They’ve scored just twice in their past six home games.

As of the end of November 2023, Sheffield Wednesday had won just one game and sat bottom of the table with six points. They were eleven points adrift from safety. Since then, the visitors have been transformed and have not only climbed out of the relegation spots, but a run of five games unbeaten in their last five has them just one point away from safety. And if Plymouth or Birmingham City fail to win, then Danny Rohl’s team will be safe regardless of the result here. They won’t want to leave it to chance however and will be confident taking on a Sunderland side in poor form. Especially given that the visitors are unbeaten in their last five and have rattled in six goals in their last two games, conceding just one. Last time out they demolished playoff contenders West Brom 3-0 at Hillsborough to massively boost their chances of survival.
