It’s a long trip for the Pilgrims this week as they head northeast to take on the Black Cats. Sunderland hosts Plymouth Argyle in the Championship in a match that pits a team chasing promotion against one battling relegation. Have we found any data to suggest anything other than a bet involving a Sunderland win for our match prediction?
The current Championship table doesn’t offer much hope for Plymouth fans. Sunderland lie third in the table. In contrast, Plymouth’s miserable recent form sees them anchored to the foot of the table, five points adrift of Hull City, Portsmouth and Luton Town above them.
At home, Sunderland is unbeaten this season with nine wins and four draws. They have scored two-thirds of their goals at home in the first half. They come into the game with three wins and a draw in their last four. Two home wins over Sheffield United (2-1) and Portsmouth (1-0) followed by a 0-0 draw at Burnley and a 1-0 win at Derby in midweek.
In contrast, Plymouth has yet to win an away game this season, taking just three points from 42 available on the road. They have gone 14 games without a win and have lost their last two without scoring, 1-0 at home to QPR last weekend and a 5-0 thrashing at Burnley in midweek.
