Sunderland can afford to start planning for next season in the Championship as they prepare to host Millwall in their next game. With 56 points, survival is assured for Sunderland but Millwall, on 50 points, still need at least three more. Hosts Sunderland are coming from a key 1-0 away win at West Bromwich Albion, ending a three-game winless run. This was also their third straight clean sheet and fifth in six matches. The last three matches represent great recovery after Sunderland’s 5-1 loss at home to Blackburn Rovers. An area that they are still struggling with, however, is the attack. In half of their last 10 matches, Sunderland failed to score. That, and their recent impressive returns in defence have resulted in mostly low-scoring games. Seven of the Black Cats’ last 10 matches have had under 2.5 goals. This game also presents a chance for Sunderland to improve their home form. Millwall are close to achieving their target of survival. They did themselves a lot of good with straight wins in their last two games. Both were crucial wins, boosting their own survival hopes, while one threw the promotion race wide open. The most recent, a 3-1 win over Cardiff City, saw the Lions open a six-point gap ahead of the relegation zone. A win here will guarantee survival but that will call for massive improvement on their away form. Millwall have failed to win any of their last four away matches, losing the last three, and failing to score in two of them. In eight away matches, they have no clean sheet, and have just one win to show. A late concession in the reverse fixture denied Millwall a first win in five meetings with Sunderland. That ended 1-1, a second such result in as many meetings between the two sides. Three of the last four meetings between these two sides had under 2.5 goals.
