Sunderland have the chance to rise to the top 10 with a win over in-form Middlesbrough when the two face off in the Championship. These two are separated by just four points, with hosts Sunderland coming into this game with 38 points, in 12th place while Middlesbrough are fifth on 42 points. A place in the promotion playoffs is well within reach for Sunderland but they have to improve on their latest outing, when they suffered a 3-1 home loss to Swansea City. In all competitions, they have three wins in their last seven matches but both teams have scored in those seven games. Four of Sunderland’s last five matches have produced over 2.5 goals while they have just two clean sheets in their last 10 Championship matches. They’ve failed to score in one of their last 10 league matches and they will also need to improve on their form at home in the league, having lost four of their last six matches ahead of this.

Middlesbrough on the other hand, will hope to keep up the improvement they’ve had in recent times. They are indeed serious contenders for a place in the top six and in their current form they will be justified to set promotion ambitions. Their only loss in the last five matches was in an FA Cup outing against Premier League side Brighton. They recovered from it with a 1-0 win over Millwall in their most recent game and will be coming into this game very confident. A win here will see them rise two places to third, and that is their ambition. While the win over Millwall served their first clean sheet in five Championship games, Middlesbrough have four straight wins in league action and have lost just once in 10 – against leaders Burnley. While they are on a good run, Middlesbrough haven’t been keeping many clean sheets; in their last 10 league matches, both teams have scored in eight.
