The Stadium of Light sets the stage for a Saturday showdown, as Sunderland prepare for battle against Brighton & Hove Albion on Matchday 30 in the Premier League. The Black Cats are 11th in the league standings, while the Seagulls are in 14th place after 29 games. Check out our match prediction below!
MD29 was a massive one for Regis Le Bris’ side, as a victory at Elland Road saw them reach the 40-point mark - a milestone widely considered the threshold to avoid relegation. Sunderland are now 12 clear of the drop and still in the picture for Europe, especially with the possibility that there could be seven or more continental competition spots up for grabs this term.
With a nine-point cushion above the dotted line, Fabian Hurzeler’s team are not in immediate danger of the drop, but they aren’t out of the woods entirely either. However, given how stacked the mid-table is, a victory here could see the Seagulls soar into the top half of the standings, provided results elsewhere go in their favour. Let’s get into the key stats!

Sunderland - Brighton: Form Analysis
Sunderland dug deep to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over fellow newly-promoted outfit Leeds United on MD29 to bring an end to their four-match winless run in the top flight (D1 L3).
Unfortunately, the euphoria of reaching the crucial 40-point mark in the EPL was short-lived, as they were sent crashing out of the FA Cup over the weekend, losing 1-0 to third-tier Port Vale on the road.
The hosts’ greatest strength this season has been their form at the Stadium of Light, where they’ve earned 26 of their 40 points. However, they have lost their last two games at this venue after going unbeaten in their first 13 this season.
Sunderland have conceded the third-fewest goals at home in the EPL this season (13)!
Meanwhile, after back-to-back wins against Nottingham Forest and Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion’s momentum was halted last time out when they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at home.
Still, the Seagulls will be optimistic in their chances of bouncing back in this match, as they are unbeaten in their last 11 games against newly promoted teams (W5 D6). They also kept five clean sheets in their last six such matches.
However, the visitors’ away record is a concern, as they have only taken 13 points from 14 league matches and have recorded just one win in their last seven on the road since December.

Sunderland & Brighton Squad Analysis
Granit Xhaka's presence in midfield was sorely missed against Port Vale, but the skipper has now made four appearances off the bench since returning from injury and should be in contention to start this weekend.
Brian Brobbey’s absence has also been a major blow for the Black Caps. Eliezer Mayenda had a very poor outing in the last match, which could prompt Le Bris to consider giving Wilson Isidor the nod to start this match up top.
Brobbey is one of several players ruled out at present for the hosts, along with Ryan Mundle, Nordi Mukiele, Dennis Cirkin, Jocelin Ta Bi and Reinildo.
Danny Welbeck to return to lead the line for the Seagulls?
Hurzeler raised a few eyebrows by opting to start Georginio Rutter against the Gunners. Welbeck had scored in back-to-back games before that fixture, and many expect the Englishman to be brought back into the run-on side this week.
Yankuba Minteh is another who Seagulls’ fans are crying out to get a starting role. He has the second-most carries into the penalty area in the EPL this season (61), only behind Jeremy Doku.
Kaoru Mitoma picked up a knock in the last match and is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks. Solly March, Stefanos Tzimas and Adam Webster are also ruled out through injury for the visitors.

Our Sunderland vs Brighton Prediction
Barring their last two league games, Sunderland’s home form this season has been exceptional, and they will be determined to make amends for their poor performance in the FA Cup in front of their home fans this weekend.
Brighton are well capable of taking three points from this match, but their away record has been very poor this season, averaging less than a point per 90. This should be a close contest, but we fancy the hosts to avoid defeat. Our Sunderland vs Brighton prediction is Sunderland or draw.
