The third matchday in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign sees a potential early season relegation six-pointer as freshly-promoted Sunderland take on Brentford. Will the Bees be able to successfully sting the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light? Check out our match prediction!
It’s been a solid start to life back in England’s top flight for Sunderland, who had to spend eight years battling their way back up from the lower divisions. They’re back now, and they already have their first win on the board.
Brentford looked like they might be in for a difficult year after their season opener but have since recovered well. The oddsmakers have these as two of the top six favourites for relegation this season, meaning there is a lot on the line when they face off. This is the first Premier League meeting between these two sides who last met in the Championship in the 2017-18 season. Back then, Brentford ran out 2-0 winners the last time they visited this ground. Will we see a repeat result on Saturday?

Sunderland - Brentford: Form Analysis
Sunderland put forward a terrific performance in their season opener, running out 3-0 winners at home against West Ham. There was always going to be the risk of a potential let-down spot in the next match, which is precisely what happened as the Black Cats were beaten 2-0 away from home by Burnley.
In their midweek EFL Cup fixture, Sunderland were eliminated on penalties at home by third division side Huddersfield following a 1-1 regular time deadlock. They’ve now failed to win and have scored just a single goal since their encouraging opening day result.
Brentford have a 6-1-2 record across all competitions dating back to last season.
After the departure of manager Thomas Frank, who guided the team to its highest ever points total in the Premier League (59), and star player Bryan Mbeumo, there was a sense of pessimism heading into the 2025-26 season.
A 3-1 away loss to Nottingham Forest in the opening fixture certainly didn’t do much to quell those feelings. However, the Bees have recovered brilliantly since then.
Brentford secured an excellent 1-0 home win against Aston Villa last weekend despite having just 24% of the possession. They followed that up with a 2-0 away victory over Bournemouth in the EFL Cup to advance to the third round. Brentford have now kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since February.

Sunderland & Brentford Squad Analysis
Brentford manager Keith Andrews made nine changes for their EFL Cup match in midweek. Expect the usual first-choice players to return to the starting lineup here, which will include new signing Dango Ouattara.
The former Bournemouth player, who was brought in to replace Mbeumo, opened his Brentford account last weekend, scoring the winning goal and putting in a man-of-the-match performance.
Ouattara provided his fullback with plenty of support against Aston Villa, putting in 15 defensive contributions, five clearances and six recoveries.
The visitors have three players listed on the injury report with Vitaly Janlet, Gustavo Nunes and Paris Maghoma missing out. Yoanne Wissa, who scored 19 league goals last season, continues to miss out with transfer speculation swirling.
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris expectedly rotated his squad for the midweek cup clash with Huddersfield, fielding a completely different 11 to the one that started against Burnley.
Le Bris is dealing with no fewer than seven injury concerns ahead of this matchup. Among them is Daniel Ballard, who was on the scoresheet in matchday one. He’s joined on the treatment table by the likes of Romaine Mundle, Nordi Mukiele, and Dennis Cirkin.
Expect Granit Xhaka to return to the starting 11 here. The former Arsenal and Leverkusen man was named captain and has expectedly been solid in his first two appearances.

Our Sunderland vs Brentford Prediction
Brentford are on the up and have plenty of momentum as they arrive at the Stadium of Light. With two straight wins and consecutive clean sheets, the oddsmakers have the visitors as the favourites to get the three points.
Sunderland appear to be heading in the opposite direction. They suffered a disappointing loss to fellow promoted side Burnley and were then knocked out of the EFL Cup by League One side Huddersfield. At these odds, we believe there is solid value in backing an away win. Our Sunderland vs Brentford prediction: Brentford wins the match.
