Stoke will be out to maintain their 100% start to the season when they entertain Walsall in the first round of the EFL Cup. This is the first competitive meeting between these two sides since 2013. Below is our prediction for the match.
Stoke were in excellent form in their Championship opener on Saturday. Mark Robins’ men humbled Derby County with a 3-1 victory. Derby had done well to hold until the second half and were the first to break the deadlock.
However, a frenetic end to the game saw the Potters score twice in stoppage time to secure the three points. Stoke have only once in the last 17 seasons failed to win their first round Cup tie. Last year, they made it to the fourth round.
Walsall have had an inconsistent start to the season. The fourth-tier side have played twice in League Two. They won the first game 2-1 at home against Swindon but were unable to keep their 100% start in the very next game.
The Saddlers were pegged back by Gillingham on Saturday, losing 1-0 away from home. This start-stop nature is also what characterised Walsall’s preseason with two losses in five games.
Matt Sadler’s men are seeking to at least emulate last season’s run to the third round.
