Improving on last season’s finish will be top of the agenda for both Stoke and Coventry as they start their Championship campaign this weekend. This match at the Bet365 Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent on Saturday comes with our likely prediction of being a low-scoring fixture.

Stoke finished last Championship season in 17th place, with a tally of 56 points, only six points above the bottom three. That was too close to comfort and was improved only by a run of three straight wins to end the season. Targeting improvements for this season will have to begin with their attack, as their goal tally of 49 was better than only five teams last year.

They come into this fixture with two defeats from their last three friendlies, but their overall record of four wins from six friendlies indicates they may have ironed out some of their worries. Coventry ended last season in ninth place with 64 points, which was nine behind the top-six places. While a playoff push would be desirable, everyone in the visiting camp knows that any improvements would be welcome.

In sharp contrast to their hosts, the Sky Blues ended last season in a whimper, with no wins from their last six league games.
