The last round produced a major shock as Stan Wawrinka knocked out world number one Novak Djokovic. The Swiss player had gone two sets up on his opponent but in the third set, Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury. Wawrinka won this title three years ago and has had his own fair share of injuries since then. Since reaching the French Open final in 2017, Wawrinka has only reached one Grand Slam quarter final and that was in Paris this year. Now he's in another and the world number 24 has only dropped two sets on his way to the last eight.

Daniil Medvedev is the fifth seed in this tournament and is continuing his excellent recent form. He reached the final of the Rogers Cup losing to Rafael Nadal and then won the Cincinnati Masters. In those two tournaments, he recorded wins over Novak Djokovic, Domininc Thiem, David Goffin and Karen Khachanov. This is his first Grand Slam quarter final but a semi-final appearance looks on the cards and he can win this match.
