by Daniel Ngulu in Europa League Predictions
Sporting Braga taking on Servette will be one of the biggest games to follow in the Europa League. It is from this 3rd qualifying round tie that Chelsea’s opponent in the Conference League playoffs will be determined. As Braga prepares to host the first leg, here’s our preview of the match and a prediction.
Braga had two perfect outings in the 2nd qualifying round of the Europa League. With home-and-away wins, they wiped away Maccabi Petah Tikva 7-0 on aggregate. The level of difficulty goes higher in this round but those comfortable wins were good for their confidence.
In the first ever meeting between the two sides, Braga will be hoping to take the lead in the home leg. The Portuguese side has the pedigree for this level of competition. Last season they reached the Champions League group stages and they have four wins in their last five Europa League games.
Servette’s domestic season is already in progress and they will hope the fitness gained from that lifts them here. The Swiss side will seek to improve from their last outing, when they were beaten 3-1 away to Lugano.
That result saw their three-match winning run in the new season come to an abrupt end. It was also an extension of coach Thomas Häberli’s major concerns – the team’s defensive performance. The visitors have no clean sheet in their four matches this season, though they scored in each of them.
With three goals in the four games, Derek Kutesa will be a threat to Braga. Servette’s season in the Europa League last season ended at the group stage. They will be keen to improve on that this time. Heading into this game, they’ve lost once and won four times.
