Southampton will welcome Preston North End in midweek English Championship action. Both teams are angling at promotion with Southampton currently fourth and Preston eighth. Southampton finally got back to winning ways over the weekend and will be out for another win. To put to a halt a three-game skid, Russell Martin’s men won a seven-goal thriller away to Birmingham. The win kept them within five points of the automatic playoff places and will be eager to chip away at this gap here. Southampton have amassed 70 points thanks to 21 wins and seven draws. With 11 matches left to play, they are almost certain of securing at least a playoff spot. The Saints are 15 points clear of seventh place.

The race for promotion is slowly heating up and Preston are in the picture. Ryan Lowe’s men have boosted their chances immensely over the last several weeks and now sit just three points from the top six. The Lilywhites haven’t lost any of their last seven league matches and have won four times. They were unfortunate not to win last time out as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Hull. This left them on 53 points. Preston missed out on the playoffs last season by just six points and they will be wary to not go through that again. The reverse match with Southampton, the first meeting between the two in 12 years, ended 2-2.
