Southampton and Bournemouth will continue their bids to avoid relegation this season when the pair meet in a crucial lower-table encounter on Thursday evening at St Mary’s Stadium. Despite an incredible performance in their last match, where they held the league leaders Arsenal to a 3-3 draw, Southampton are still rooted to the bottom of the league table with 24 points after 32 matches, four points from safety. With that draw, the hosts have seen their poor recent form extend to seven matches since their last win, including four wins and three draws. Their home record isn’t much better, with just two wins in 16 matches at home, along with four draws, and ten losses. The Saints are also winless in their last four home matches, losing three and drawing one. Southampton won the reverse fixture 1-0 back in October, and they need a repeat of that in this one, with time and matches running out quickly. 

Meanwhile, Bournemouth have pulled off a few big results in recent weeks and have gotten themselves out of the bottom three, but they are by no means safe just yet. The visitor are currently in 15th place with 33 points in 32 matches, just five points above the drop zone. Bournemouth picked up a huge six points against Leicester City and Spurs in the last few weeks but were unable to keep it going in their last match, losing 4-0 to an improving West Ham United. Over their last six matches, Bournemouth have won three and lost three. Their away record has been their major downfall, losing 10 of their 16 matches on the road this term, along with two draws and four wins, though they do come into this match following back-to-back wins in their last two away matches. With their opponents fighting for their Premier League lives, Bournemouth will know that this is going to be a tricky fixture for them, and they will need to try and get an early goal if possible to silence what’s expected to be a fired-up home crowd.
