by Devesh Jaganath in AFCON Predictions
On Friday evening we will head to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha to see South Africa take on Congo in the third round of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Bafana Bafana are currently in second place in Group K while Ba Diabulu ya Mbwaki are right behind them in third. Check out our match prediction below!
Matches between these two have typically been very closely contested. Of the four previous encounters, three ended in drawn results, with the only victory over that time going the way of South Africa back in 2014 during this same compeition. Notably, the 2014-15 season was also the last time that Congo actually reached the main draw of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Having claimed third place in the last edition of the AFCON, and with solid form coming into this match, Bafana Bafana are the outright favourites for this double-header according to the bookmakers. Let’s get into how this match may pan out.

South Africa - Congo Republic: Form Analysis
South Africa have made a positive start to their Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, earning four points from their first two matches.
Against Uganda in round one, Bafana Bafana played to a 2-2 draw before coming from a goal down to beat South Sudan 3-2 in dramatic fashion a few days later. In both matches, Thalente Mbatha scored in stoppage time.
Much of the hosts’ best work over the last couple of years have come on their home patch, where they are unbeaten in their last 11 matches across all competitions (W5 D6 L0).
South Africa are unbeaten in their last 10 matches dating back to their semi-final defeat against Nigeria at AFCON 2023!
Meanwhile, Congo’s qualification campaign began very promisingly, with the side notching up a 1-0 win over South Sudan. However, they were unable to build on that result, losing 2-0 to Uganda on matchday two.
That victory over South Sudan is the only win the Red Devils have managed in their last eight matches in all competitions, dating back to a 1-0 win over the same opponent back in March 2023.
On the road, Congo are winless in their last four games, and have only won one of their last 12. Notably, the visitors only kept one clean sheet during that 12-match period, while conceding 23 and scoring 10.

South Africa & Congo Republic Squad Analysis
For South Africa, the major team news is the withdrawal of Thalente Mbatha, who scored goals in both of the side’s previous matches, which ultimately earned them all four points so far.
Jayden Adams also pulled out of the training camp earlier this week and both he and Mbatha have been replaced in the squad by Bathusi Aubaas and Sinoxolo Kwayiba, who reported for duty on Monday.
Owing to their solid start in the PSL this season, six Orlando Pirates have been called up to the national squad!
One major boost for the host nation this week is the return of Ronwen Williams between the sticks.
For Congo, on the other hand, the lead-up to this match has been an absolute nightmare, with the Congolese Football Federation (Fecofoot) being forcibly shut down less than a week ago. That was before they were even able to announce their touring squad.
As it stands, the visitors are expected to have retained the same squad from last month.

Our South Africa vs Congo Republic Prediction
Given how heavily fancied South Africa are to win this match, there is very little value to be had across most markets, but the halves result option does look like a tempting prospect at very respectable odds.
Bafana Bafana have started matches well in recent times, particularly on home soil, and against an unsettled Congo, the hosts will fancy their chances at another solid first 45 in this one. Our South Africa vs Congo prediction: Half Time Result - South Africa!
South Africa vs Congo Republic - Other Interesting Predictions

2 Goals Ahead Early Payout
More than 80 leagues and competitions are available on this football promotion from bet365. If the team that you have backed takes a two-goal lead at any point in the game, then your bet is a winner. This counts on both single bets and on multiple placed on the full time market, though of course on a multiple it is only the game in question that is marked as a winner, all the other selections still have to win as well.
A bet placed on any enhanced price is not valid for this offer, nor any bet that is cashed out. If you have partially chased out, the remainder of the stake is paid out as a winner. If your acca selection would have been a loser but for this offer then you will not gain any acca boost winnings. So for example, your team goes 2-0 up so you are paid out as a winner but the end result is 2-2, your bet is still a winner if all the other selections win but you do not gain any acca boost.
