The round of 16 in the 2025 African Cup of Nations continues on Sunday with South Africa taking on Cameroon. Will Bafana Bafana or the Indomitable Lions stamp their ticket to the quarter-finals and a likely meeting with hosts Morocco? Check out our match prediction!

Both teams impressed in the group stage to make it to this stage. South Africa gave Egypt a real run for their money in Group B but would ultimately have to settle for second place with six points. Cameroon, meanwhile, were just edged out of first place in Group F on goal differential by Ivory Coast, despite accumulating seven points with a 2-1-0 record.

South Africa have one AFCON championship to their name (1996) and will be looking for another deep run after achieving a third place finish in the 2023 edition. Cameroon rank second all time with five AFCON titles, with their most recent coming in 2017. This marks the first time that these two nations have faced off in nearly 10 years.

South Africa - Cameroon: Form Analysis

South Africa earned a 2-1 win over Angola to kick off the tournament. They were unable to find the breakthrough against 10-man Egypt, despite firing off 18 shots and having 64% of the ball.

Bafana Bafana would respond strongly in their final group stage match, beating Zimbabwe 3-2 thanks to a late spot kick.

The senior squad (excluding COSAFA Cup and African Nations Championship) has lost only once in the last 11 matches. During that stretch, South Africa recorded seven victories and three draws.

Cameroon experienced a tumultuous lead up to the 2025 African Cup of Nations to say the least.

They posted a 1-1-2 record in four World Cup qualifying matches which saw them eliminated in the playoff by DR Congo. On top of that Cameroon also decided to replace their manager just a few weeks prior to the start of AFCON 2025.

They’ve been able to rectify that form in Morocco, as new manager David Pagou led the Indomitable Lions to a pair of one-goal margin victories over Gabon and Mozambique as well as a 1-1 draw with Ivory Coast.

South Africa & Cameroon Squad Analysis

South Africa manager Hugo Broos has a full team to choose from ahead of this round of 16 fixture. Lyle Foster has been the star man for Bafana Bafana and has also been one of the standout players in AFCON 2025 so far.

The Burnley striker has gotten himself on the scoresheet twice as well as produced another two assists. His four goal involvements is tied with Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman for the most in the tournament.

Orlando Pirates winger Oswin Appollis has also been making a name for himself. The 24-year-old has scored twice so far, including the winning goal from the penalty spot in the final 10 minutes in South Africa’s 3-2 win over Zimbabwe.

Cameroon could be missing their defensive captain - another sign that this match could provide goals.

Nouhou Tolo was forced off in Cameroon’s final group stage fixture with a hamstring injury and remains a doubt for this one. Christopher Wooh replaced him in that game and is the likely candidate to take his spot on Sunday.

David Pagou will have to make a choice between his two talented young strikers; 19-year-old Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane netted the winning goal against Mozambique, while 22-year-old Levante striker Etta Eyong scored the winner in Cameroon’s opener vs Gabon.

Elsewhere, Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo will be the focal point of the Cameroon attack, taking up the number 10 position behind the striker.

Our South Africa vs Cameroon Prediction

Both South Africa and Cameroon boast strong attacking weapons. South Africa will be counting on Lyle Foster to produce another moment of magic while Cameroon have one of the best players in the tournament in Bryan Mbeumo.

Both teams have looked solid on the attacking end in the group stage; South Africa only failed to find the net against Egypt while Cameroon was able to get on the scoresheet in all three games. As a result, we believe this match should finish at least 1-1. Our South Africa vs Cameroon prediction: BTTS.
