Sloane Stephens and Diana Shnaider, both unseeded, will meet in the second round of the 2024 WTA Wimbledon Championship. This will be the first career meeting between the two and the winner will next face Naomi Osaka or Emma Navarro. Sloane Stephens ended a two-game skid with her first-round victory here.

This was a 2-0 success over lucky loser Elsa Jacquemont. The American hasn’t won more than one match in her last two appearances in Wimbledon and will hope to end this here. A quarter-finalist at SW19 in 2013, Stephens has recently struggled with her form.

She has compiled a 19-16 record and has managed just three wins in her last 10 matches. The former US Open champion hasn’t won multiple matches at a tour event since a run to the third round in Madrid. Advancing to this round has moved the former world number three five places in the live ranking to 45th.

Meanwhile Diana Shnaider is in red-hot form and is a huge favourite to progress to the third round. The Russian arrived at the All England Club after winning the title in Bad Homburg. The momentum continued in the first round where she pegged back former Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova in three sets.

Shnaider won a gruelling battle that lasted more than two hours by orchestrating a comeback. She has now won six matches in a row and has compiled an 8-2 record on grass. The 20-year-old, who is making her Wimbledon debut, is having her best tour campaign.

She has won 30 of 43 matches which has resulted in three titles across the tour and challenger levels. Shnaider, who earlier in the season was ranked outside the WTA top 100, is now ranked 27th in the live ranking.
