Fourth seed Jannik Sinner plays unseeded Jesper De Jong in the Australian Open second round. The winner goes into round three and will face either the 24th seed Sebastian Baez or unseeded Daniel Elahi Galan. Sinner is playing his first tournament of the year having opted not to play for Italy in the United Cup. He has a good record in this hard court Grand Slam and reached the quarter finals two years ago. Last year saw him get to the fourth round and then later in the year the Wimbledon semi-finals. Sinner had a successful 2023 getting to seven finals (all on hard courts) and winning four of them, twice beating Daniil Medvedev. Round one of this tournament produced a straight sets win over Botic van de Zandschulp.
Jesper de Jong was ranked 161st at the start of this tournament. He had to go through the qualifying rounds to get into this main draw. Two of his three matches were won in straight sets but he had to go to a final one to get past Camilo Ugo Carabelli. That was a massive win for him as it took him into the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. He's up to 138th in the live rankings, a new career best. The first round went well for him as he beat Pedro Cachin in four sets after losing the first one. His only other tournament this year has been a Challenger Tour event in which he reached the quarter finals.. This is much tougher and we tip Sinner to win in straight sets.
