Sheffield United vs Brighton Prediction & Betting Tips - Premier League

by Ian John | in Premier League Prediction

Sunday's first Premier League game sees Sheffield United take on Brighton in a repeat of their FA Cup Fourth Round clash which Brighton won 5-2 just a couple of weeks ago. The Blades did record a first away win of the season at Luton last weekend in a 3-1 win and they faced a Brighton side who have struggled a little on the road this season, winning 3, drawing 3 and losing 6 of their dozen games on the road.

Sheffield United - Brighton: Form Analysis

Sheffield United come into this game on the back of their first away win all season, a resounding 3-1 success at Luton which just about keeps their hopes of avoiding the drop alive. Manager Chris Wilder will know that his team still have a massive job, being eight points from safety and bottom of the league with the worst goal difference in the division by 13 goals. All of the Blades last six games have seen over 3.5 goals scored in them, with both teams scoring in four of those five games. The Blades have scored 13 goals in those games, but have conceded 15, which has been their Achilles heel all season long. United also have the second worst home record in the Premier League with just 8 points collected at home from 36 available.

Brighton remain in the top half of the table despite a relatively poor run of form by their standards of late, which has included a 4-0 defeat at Luton, as well as defeats to Arsenal and Tottenham. However, the Seagulls have lost just two of their last nine games in all competitions, but those defeats have come in their last three games. Sandwiched in between was a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace and the visitors can also point to a comfortable 5-2 win on this ground just a few weeks ago in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Brighton's away form has been especially poor of late and that will be a concern for manager Roberto de Zerbi as his team head into the final third of the season.

Sheffield United & Brighton Squad Analysis

Sheffield United come into this game with a doubt over striker Oli McBurnie, who has been suffering from a tight calf in recent times, but the Blades seem confident that the Scottish striker could be fit for the game at the weekend. Another striker, Chilean Ben Brereton-Diaz, missed the Blades win last week at Luton with a tight hamstring, but could also be fit to play if required against Brighton. George Baldock and Ivo Grbic could also return for the home side. Long term absentees Rhys Norrington-Davies, Daniel Jebbison, John Egan and Chris Basham remain sidelined.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi remains without Solly March and Julio Enciso, who are both long term absentees. They could be joined by Joao Pedro, who has a thigh problem and could be out for several weeks. James Milner will miss the game due to a thigh injury, but Jack Hinshelwood has eased fears that he could be out for a while by making a return to training this week. Simon Adingra will also be in consideration after he made his return from the African Cup of Nations in the past week, although whether he starts remains a doubt.

Sheffield United - Brighton Key Points

  1. The Blades have won just one of their last five at home, losing 3, drawing one. They have conceded a massive 31 goals in their 12 home games this season.
  2. Brighton have the 12th best away record in the Premier League, picking up 12 points from 12 games from 3 wins, 3 draws and nine defeats. They have lost three of their last five away games, drawing the other two.
  3. Brighton's games have averaged 3.46 goals per game this season, the 5th highest in the Premier League. Sheffield United's games have averaged 3.42 goals per game, the 6th highest in the division.

  5. Prior to their 5-2 home FA Cup defeat to Brighton a few weeks back, the Blades had lost just one of the previous 13 games against the Seagulls, winning 7 and drawing the other five.
  6. Three of the last five games between these two teams have finished in a 1-1 draw, including November's Premier League clash at the AMEX.

Our Sheffield United vs Brighton Prediction

Neither Sheffield United or Brighton have been particularly convincing in the Premier League of late, although the Blades are certainly struggling the most of the two teams. The data for the two is a bit muddled as a result of the inconsistency but in terms of sheer quality, Brighton are clearly at an advantage here and that big win in the cup a few weeks back will loom large in the psyche of Blades fans and players. Our Sheff Utd vs Brighton prediction therefore is for the away team to come away with the win here.

Sheffield United vs Brighton - Other Interesting Predictions

Over 2.5 Goals To Be Scored

A look at the stats regarding the Over 2.5 Goals market for the Sheff Utd v Brighton game reveals that between them, the teams average 3.54 goals per game and that 71% of games involving the two have had 3 goals or more in. All of which points to a simple conclusion meaning our second prediction for Sheff Utd v Brighton is for over 2.5 goals to be scored.

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) to score at any time

Last time at Bramall Lane in the FA Cup, Joao Pedro scored a hat-trick for the Seagulls in their 5-2 win over the Blades. The Portuguese striker followed that up with another goal in the 4-1 win over Palace, but he risks missing out with an ankle injury which means that Evan Ferguson could be in line for a rare start and it would not be a surprise to see the Irish youngster get amongst the goals if given the opportunity.
