20th seed Sebastian Baez faces unseeded Sebastian Ofner for a place in round three at Roland Garros. Both of these players had to go to a final set to win their first-round match in this outdoor clay court tournament. World number 20 Baez beat qualifier Gustavo Heide after losing the first set. That win has taken him up to 18th in the live rankings and 15th in the ATP Race. The Argentinian is playing at Roland Garros for only the third time and has never made it past this stage. A win here will take him into round three for the third successive Grand Slam tournament. Earlier this year he won two clay court tournaments in Rio and Santiago. Form in Europe hasn’t been so successful, but he did reach the quarter-finals in last week’s Geneva Open.

Sebastian Ofner had an even tougher first round match. He lost both of the first two sets against wild card Terence Atmane and had to go to a tie-break in the third. Ofner survived though and is in the second round at Roland Garros for the second year in a row. 2023 saw him reach the fourth round and was the first time he’d won in the main draw. The Austrian is 45th in the rankings and down to 55th in the live list. That’s due to all the points he’s defending after last year’s good run here. He’s lower in the ATP Race and was 74th after his first-round victory. Earlier this year he played on the South American clay court swing but lost all three of his matches. He’s yet to win two successive main draw matches on clay this year. We go for Baez to get the victory to set up a match against either Corentin Moutet or Alexander Shevchenko, both of whom are unseeded.
