Salzburg vs Roma Prediction & Betting Tips - Europa League

Italian side AS Roma will travel to Austria for the first-leg tie of their Europa League last 16 playoff fixture with Red Bull Salzburg set for Thursday at the Red Bull Arena. Salzburg are here courtesy of their elimination from the Champions League. Meanwhile, Roma finished second in their group with 10 points. Salzburg resumed their league season over the weekend and did so with an emphatic 4-0 home win over Austria Lustenau to maintain their six-point lead. They have won 13 of their 17 games with only one loss suffered and look set for a 10th successive league title. After a two-month winter break, Salzburg’s first competitive match was against rivals Sturm Graz in the OFB Cup where they lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Salzburg have won just one of their last seven games in Europe and have not scored more than one goal in their last four European home games. They were pooled together with AC Milan in the Champions League and drew 1-1 at home before losing 4-0 away. This extended their winless run against Italian teams to four matches but they can boast five wins in total in 18 played against Serie A teams.

Roma are in the midst of a top-four battle in the Serie A with three other teams. They are currently fourth on 41 points, tied with the third placed team. Jose Mourinho’s team has won 12 of their 22 games with five losses in their domestic league. In their most recent game, they drew 1-1 away to Lecce to extend their unbeaten run to two after they had lost successive matches earlier. One of the losses was a 2-1 home defeat to league strugglers Cremonese that saw them dumped out of the Coppa Italia. In the Europa League this season Jose Mourinho’s men have scored in each and every game with their last two matches seeing them score a combined five goals. All but one of their six matches in the competition have seen over 2.5 goals scored. They won 2-1 against HJK Helsinki in their last away match in the competition. In Roma’s last visit to Austria, they beat Austria Wien 4-2 in the Europa League in 2016.
