It was in 2008 that Roger Federer last won the US Open title. That triumph was his fifth in a row but since then the SwIss legend has lost in two finals and three semi-finals. This year, Federer has been getting gradually better results in Grand Slam events. He lost in the fourth round at the Australian Open, made the semi-finals in Paris and lost to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. Could he be due a win here perhaps? So far in this tournament he hasn't had it all his own way. He lost the opening set in his matches against qualifier Sumit Nagal and Damir Dzumhur  That's six times in his last three tournaments that he has lost the first set of a match.

David Goffin is the 15th seed for this tournament and is in good form at present. He has seen his ranking climb in recent weeks after making it to the final of the Cincinnati Masters, losing to Daniil Medvedev. Goffin also reached the quarter finals at Wimbledon and lost in the final of the Halle grass court championship to Roger Federer. He was ranked 33 in the world at that time. The last two years have seen Goffin reach this stage of the US Open. The past week has seen him drop just one set and that was in his opening match against Corentin Moutet. Federer has won eight of his nine matches against Goffin but the Belgian has won a set off him in four of those meetings. Go for over 3.5 sets to be played in this game.
