Third seeded Reilly Opelka has a great chance of reaching the BMW Open final this year. In the second round he's up against the unseeded Oscar Otte. The winner takes on either lucky loser Alejandro Taiblo or the unseeded Hugo Gaston. Opelka is the only seeded player left in the top half of the draw after the surprise defeats of top seeded Alexander Zverev and Daniel Evans. Opelka is world ranked 17th and that's a rise of nine places since the start of the year. The American has shown improved form on clay in the past year. He got to the semi-finals of the Rome Masters and the third round at Roland Garros. 2022 has already seen him win the US Men's Clay Court Championships. Away from clay, Opelka won a hard court event held in Dallas and got to the final at Delray Beach, losing to Cameron Norrie.

Oscar Otte is world ranked 62nd and that's a rise of 39 places since the start of 2022. He's been consistent but only made it to one quarter final this year. That was on clay in last week's Serbia Open where he beat Aslan Karatsev before losing to Fabio Fognini in the last eight. If he wins this match his record for the year will get to 8-8. Otte has won seven clay court tournaments on the ITF and Challenger Tour circuits but nothing on the ATP Tour. His best performance in the French Open has been reaching the second round in 2019 with two first round exits and twice being beaten in the qualifying rounds.
