Rebecca Sramkova faces Eva Lys in the last of four quarterfinals in the Hungarian Grand Prix. The match between the two looks likely to be a keenly contested affair between two players relatively close in the WTA rankings. Will our prediction favour the more experienced Sramkova, or can Lys continue her excellent form of late to progress into the semi-final?
Sramkova has tasted victory this year, winning the W50 Porto back in January on hard courts. Her best performance on clay came in the Italian Open where she came through qualifying to reach fourth round, only losing in three sets to ninth seed Jelena Ostapenko. However, she hasn't managed to recapture that form with her progress to the quarterfinal here, her best showing since.
The Slovakian right-hander beat Miriam Bianca Bulgaru 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round here before her best performance in a while in the second round, defeating third seed Xiyu Wang 7-6(4), 6-3.
Her German opponent Eva Lys has continued her excellent form of late in this tournament. She swept aside sixth seed Nadia Podoroska in the first round in Budapest with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-0 victory. She then faced tough American Bernarda Pera in the second round and progressed after Pera retired in the game with the score at 7-6(6), 4-1 in Lys' favour.
Lys has yet to win a tournament this year, but her form suggests that she will do so sooner rather than later, especially with her serve being so dominant. Lys has faced just five break points on her serve in this tournament so far.
A semi-final against either Ella Seidel or top seed Diana Shnaider awaits the winner of this match on Saturday.
