Quentin Halys takes on J.J. Wolf in the first round of the Roma Masters. This is the final outdoor clay Masters event before Roland Garros with the winner of this match up against 14th seeded Hubert Hurkacz in round two. Halys begins this tournament ranked 71st in the world and has been as high as 64th and as low as 81st this year. The 26-year-old has reached two semi-finals this year and another two quarter finals. Of the semi-finals, one was on clay in Estoril where he had wins over Roberto Bautista Agut and Dominic Thiem. Agut got his revenge in Madrid, beating Halys in the last 32 He's won a couple of Challenger Tour clay court titles, the most recent being last year,
J,J, Wolf is the world number 54 and like his opponent, unseeded for this Madrid Masters. The American was a career-high 39th in the rankings earlier this year. His clay court season got off to a good start with a last eight appearance in Houston. He didn't beat any players in the top 80 before losing to the then world number 133 Giys Brouwer in straight sets. His only other clay court tournament this year was in Madrid where he lost in the first round to Alexander Shevchenko, again without winning a set. Wolf has never played at Roland Garros and is still waiting to win his first clay court event. We go for the more experienced Halys to make it into round two of the Rome Masters.
