Matchday 38 in the English Championship sees 15th-place Preston North End hosting 17th-placed Portsmouth at Deepdale. The Lilywhites and Pompey both find themselves pretty comfortably above the drop zone but will want to ensure that they don’t fall into a relegation scrap as we approach the end of the season. Here’s our match prediction!
Preston’s 44 points total sees them nine points above 22nd-place Derby with nine matches remaining in the 2024/25 league campaign. They come into this fixture off the back of conceding in the dying moments against Sunderland which led to a 1-1 draw away from home.
The result extended Preston’s Championship winless run to six games, four of which ended in draws. However, the Lilywhites faithful will be proud of their team for making it to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, of which they qualified with a 3-0 home win over Burnley in the middle of their barren league run.
Portsmouth slumped to a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to bottom-feeders Plymouth on Wednesday. It was the team’s second loss in the last three outings for Pompey who had previously won three matches in a row in mid February.
The visitors are now seven points above the bottom three and will want to ensure that the gap isn’t cut any further than that.

Our Preston North End vs Portsmouth Prediction
While Preston have struggled with converting draws into wins lately, they've been a consistently tough team to beat all season on their home patch. Their buoyed by their superb defensive record at this ground where they have kept eight clean sheets in 18 fixtures while conceding an average of just 0.78 per game.
