One of the classic Metropolitan Division matchups as the 28-24-8 Pittsburgh Penguins host the 28-23-9 Washington Capitals. The Pens had a horrible road trip to the north west, winning in Vancouver before losses against Seattle, Calgary and Edmonton. They were back home to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets early on Wednesday morning in a game that finished in a 5-3 win. The Pens scored just three goals in the last three games of that trip, something that they have struggled with all season with only six teams finding the net on fewer occasions. Jake Guentzel being out injured has not helped in that regard but he might not be a Penguin for much longer with the trade deadline coming just hours after this match. A loss here and playoff hopes out the window and he might be gone.
The Caps arrive fresh having not been in action since Sunday when they lost at home to the Arizona Coyotes. Given that the Yotes had only broken a 14-game losing streak the game before in Ottawa, that would have been disappointing for the Caps to be on the wrong end of a 2-5 scoreline. The last time that they were on the road was a poor effort as well, shipping eight against the Detroit Red Wings in a game that they would rather forget. The Caps have a power play goal in five straight games, scoring on eight of the 19 opportunities given to them, an excellent 42.1% strike rate. Pens fans will be hoping that they can stay out of the box as their kill has slipped a little of late. Sonny Milano has been the hot hand of late, scoring in three games on the bounce.
